Friday's Class

Hey guys, It's Luke

On Friday's class we have learned a new thing called "Systems of equations: Word Problems". This is basically using the info that is given  to  write 2 equations with 2 unknowns. We can either use Elimination or Substitution.
We also witness Mr.Piatek's drawing, a turtle and rabbit.. :D

Here is a recap for Friday's lesson
Example 1: A total of 36,500 tickets were sold for a concert. Some of the tickets cost $35 and some cost $20, depending on where you sit. how many tickets of each price were sold if the revenue of the concert was $940,000?

Step1: First we need to find x and y.
x = $35, y = $20

Step2: Then we write the 2 equation:

x + y = 36,500  ->  x = 36,500 - y

35x + 20y = 940,000

Step3: (Use Substitution to solve this system), You should identify which suitable method you are going to use for this word problem.
Remember the steps for solving 2 equations, 2 unknowns using the substitution method:
It should be on your Unit 4 Analytic Geometry Booklet.

Step4: We substitute x to ( 36,500 - y ) on the 2nd equation.
35 ( 36,500 - y ) + 20y = 940,000
1,277,500 - 35y + 20y = 940,000

Step5: We solve for y

- 15y = 940,000 - 1,277,500
- 15y = -337,500
y = 22,500

Step6: Since we know that y = 22,500, we can easily solve for x.

x = 36,500 - y
x = 36,500 - 22,500
x = 14,000

Step7: Don't forget after solving the word problem you have to answer for what it was asking you, don't just leave it like ( x = 14,000 and y = 22,500) <-- that is a not the answer. You have to write a sentence answering the question that was ask.

There are 14,000 $35 tickets sold and 22,500 $20 tickets sold.

Well that's all :D, Have a nice weekend guys, Remember to finish your Assignment 5 because it is due for Monday.. and Mr. Piatek will take it in.. and also check our wiki if you missed something from the previous class. Reminder remember the Project is due on Jan.6, discuss it with your group before you guys get busy in the holidays. That's all for now :) bye bye
