November 3rd, 2010

Hey Guys Jasdeep here ,

Math Headlines -

1. Set D is still available for Trignometry Assignment in Wikisolutions manual.
2. Principia Mathematica Project Draft is due on November 19,2010
3. Mid term Reports cards are coming. All the outstanding projects are due on 9th   of this November.
4. October Hall of Fame winner to be posted soon.
5. Algebra Test is on Nov 8,2010.
Just kidding,don't take it serious.

Today was a short Class because of T.A.In the Begining of the class Mr. P discussed about Mid Term Reportcards. If anyone who have outstanding assignments so you guys better done them on time. After Then we got our Trig Tests back. Mr.P go over some of the questions of  the test .Basically We had started our new unit Algebra and it is pretty easy needs some factoring skills. We did some examples of solving Quadratic equations. We learn two different algebraic methods of solving a quadratic equation.First one is by factoring and the second one is using completing the square. Here's one example for you.

Ex. 1
9k2 + 46k + 5

Solution:

Step 1
Find What We need in the brackets First that gives us 9k2
(9k      ) (k       )
So (9k)(k)=
9k2

Step 2
Then We need two factors that have product of 5
(9k + 1)(k + 5)

Now check your answer if you did it right.
9k(k+5)+1(k+5)
9k2+45k+k+5
9k2+46k+5

In other cases,we have to find the roots or x-intercepts of a equation like.

Ex.2
- 6x2 +24=0

Solution

Step 1
Firstly factor the -6 outside of brackets
-6 (x2-4)

Step 2
Then factor what is inside the brackets
-6(x+2)(x-2)

Step 3
Set the equation equals to zero to find the roots of the equation
-6(x+2)(x-2) = 0
x+2 = 0                      x-2 = 0
x = -2                        x = 2
So the roots of - 6x2 +24=0 are x=2 & x=-2

Don't forget the homework Example 2-b,c,d.
If you want to check your answers. Here they are.
B. x= 1/3, x=-5/2
C. x=2 , x = -2
D. x= + or -sqrt5/4
If they are wrong, please tell me okkkkk.
Have a good night everyone .See you tomorrow morning.
